CHARACTER'S FULL HISTORY (FROM BIRTH TO CURRENT) :
Jake was born on 30I0.04, to Rear Admiral Jason Caffey [Chief of Starbase operations - Ret.] and his wife Laura. Another service brat, in a long family line of service brats, dating back to the late 20th Century. His great - great - great - great - grandfather, and namesake, [United States Army] Colonel Jacob Caffey, was very instrumental in averting what at the time could have been World War III. It was at a time when the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics [U.S.S.R. - Russia] were still at odds with each other politically. A Soviet 'Desaunt' [Pathfinder] Unit was discovered by Colonel Caffey when he was sent to investigate the disappearance of a company of the National Guardsmen in Alaska. The Soviet unit was there to destroy a section of the pipeline by launching floatation charges from a pumping station, which was to be Colonel Caffey's last stand.
He, along with the few guardsmen that were left, was able to stop the unit at the pumping station, when both 'commanders' realized this was not their war, but the war of the governments at home. The Russian colonel had 'surrendered', but unfortunately was killed along with Colonel Caffey, and almost everyone else, when a hand-grenade was tossed into the room. During this time, both governments were on the brink of war over the 'misunderstanding' regarding the 'accidental intrusion' of the Pathfinder unit into U.S. territory. Fortunately, the war never happened, the unit was allowed to return home, and no mention of the 'incident' was ever made to the public. Colonel Caffey was survived by his daughters, Lori and Denise, and his son John [Jake's great - great - great - grandfather]. This story became somewhat of a legend with the family, and Jake always wished, [and sometimes still does], that he could have known that man of long ago. He always tries to pattern his life the way he believes his great - great - great - great - grandfather used to be.
On 46I0.04, he was finally old enough to enlist, so he sent an application to Star Fleet Academy in San Francisco. As his father was, at the time, commanding officer of the destroyer U.S.S. Saladin, Saladin Class Starship, NCC-500, he felt his chances were good. He was nervously awaiting a response. Days seemed like years. Then finally it came, and he was at last a cadet at the Academy, specializing in helm and command tactics. Hoping to have a command of his own someday, he made sure to learn everything he could and to be the best at everything possible, which wasn't easy. The FOUR YEARS WAR started with the BATTLE OF AXANAR [4707.25] during his first year so training seemed to take on a whole new meaning for him. But he survived and went on to graduate in '50 . . . Ist in his class. During that time, he would remember something his father had told him . . . about how his first officer, a Lieutenant Commander had rescued him when he and his landing party were captured by Klingons that set a trap for them . . . and he would hope that he would have a crew like that someday. That same first officer later went on to become Fleet Admiral.
His first assignment out of the Academy, was as a helmsman for four years ['50-'54] on the U.S.S. Republic, Constitution Class Starship NCC-I37I, three years after the start of the FOUR YEARS WAR. Well, he always said he wanted to see some action, and sadly enough, he got his wish. Just three short months after he was assigned, the Battle of Andromeda would take place [on stardate 5009.I7], and the Republic would play a very instrumental part in it. Along with the U.S.S. Constellation, the U.S.S. Kestral, and the U.S.S. Pegasus, the Republic repelled two task forces of Klingon D-4E's and the new D-7's at Andromeda, but not without many casualties. The Republic and Kestral were nearly destroyed when two badly damaged D-4E's tried suicide runs at them. Ensign Caffey's quick thinking and maneuvering managed to save both ships. Basically, he created a new maneuver originally thought impossible by designers. The Republic's shields were gone, the main bridge controls were inoperable, and at least a third of the crew were either dead or seriously wounded. It wasn't until later that it was discovered he had some internal damage and bleeding from when part of the bulkhead in the secondary bridge collapsed and fell on him as he was preparing to fire on an attacking Klingon D-7. This battle had earned him The BATTLE of ANDROMEDA, the Grankite Order Of Tactics, and his first [of three] Star Fleet Wound Decoration ribbons.
About five months later [5I02.2I], the Republic, Kestral and Pegasus proceeded to DELGON-R to engage Klingon forces already there. The Republic and Kestral took several major hits with only a few casualties, but a lot of wounded, Caffey included. This earned him his second 'wounded' ribbon as well as The Battle Of Delgon-R ribbon.
Another five months after that [5I07.09], the Republic, Kestral and Pegasus joined the U.S.S. Iblis [under the command of then Cmdr. David Watson] at DONATU-V, engaging three Klingon D-I6A destroyers, two D-7 cruisers, and one of their new D-20A cruisers. One D-I6A was destroyed, another badly damaged, as well as one D-7 and the D-20A. The Kestral suffered only minor damage to her warp engines, but the Republic, Pegasus, and Iblis took several major hits with only a few casualties, but a lot of wounded. This earned him The BATTLE of DONATU-V ribbon.
Then, two long months later, on stardate 5I09.I2, the war ends [a little late for some] with the AXANAR PEACE MISSION. The five starship envoy consisted of the U.S.S. Constitution, the U.S.S. Iblis, the U.S.S. Kestral, the U.S.S. Pegasus, and the U.S.S. Republic, thereby earning Ensign Caffey the Palm Leaf Of Axanar Peace Mission ribbon.
About three years later [5406.I3], Caffey was promoted to Lieutenant, Junior Grade and reassigned to the U.S.S. Yorktown, Constitution Class Starship, NCC-I704, again as a helmsman.
Two rather uneventful years later [5606.I3], he was promoted to Lieutenant, and reassigned to the U.S.S. Lexington, Constituition Class Starship, NCC-I703, as her Assistant Chief Helmsman for three years. On stardate 56I0.2, while leading a landing party on an uncharted planet near the Romulan Neutral Zone, two of his men were captured by a small, but apparently hostile, 'native' hunting party. Lt. Caffey, without violating the Prime Directive, managed to rescue his men, receiving laser burns to his back, a broken leg, and a concussion in the process. Upon the Captain's recommendation, Caffey received his second Wound decoration, the Silver Palm W/Cluster, the Karagite Order Of Heroism, and the Star Fleet Command Citation For Valor. On stardate 58II.09, while on patrol near the Romulan nuetral zone, the Lexington received a general distress signal - believed to be from an Independence class freighter en route to Outpost I2. They reported being under attack by two Romulan Warbirds. On arrival, they discovered no traces at all of any freighter, destroyed or otherwise, and no sign that there was even a battle of any kind - - nothing! Then suddenly, two Warbirds appeared . . . the Lexington took a minor hit in engineering before her sheilds came up. The Captain gave the order for 'some maneuvering room', at Caffey's discretion. Jake had only a few seconds to think, then saw the opening he was looking for . . . he dropped down 500 metres, kicked in the warp drive, and went straight up the middle. This move caught the two Warbirds so much off guard, that when they turned to fire, they ended up firing on each other . . . causing extensive damage to both ships, which finally limped back across the Neutral Zone. The Captain, needless to say was also somewhat surprised, but very much impressed. So much so, that he recommended Jake for the Garth Order Of Tactics, and the Prentares Ribbon Of Commendation [2nd class]. That maneuver would later become part of the standard helm/tactical training at the Academy.
On stardate 5906.I3, Jake was promoted to Lieutenant Commander, and transferred to the U.S.S. Exeter, Constitution Class Starship, NCC-I706, as Chief Helm Officer. The next two years were again somewhat uneventful, just routine assignments and patrols. Then on stardate 6I06.I3, Jake was promoted to Commander, and assigned to the U.S.S. Defiant, Constitution Class Starship, NCC-I709 as her new Executive [First] Officer. This assignment was the shortest of his career . . . only six months. He was soon transferred to STARBASE I0 as 2nd Officer [under then Fleet Captain C'Tanar Lerl].
So for the next four years [actually three years, and eleven months], Jake was basically a 'glorified paper pusher', which he wasn't exactly thrilled with, but he would never complain about. He did however, find time to fall in love . . . a lovely, young Lieutenant Commander. named Kira, the Assistant Chief of Security. Finally, he got what he always wanted - - his own command. On stardate [650I.I5], the U.S.S. Constitution, Constitution Class Starship, NCC-I700 was available, and it was his with a promotion to Captain. Given the option of picking his own officers, Jake had Kira reassigned to the Constitution as the new Chief of Security. On stardate 6706.I, the Constitution was assigned escort duty for the President of the UNITED FEDERATION of PLANETS, to a Delegation Conferrence on Rigel IV. On stardate 6706.I4, during the conferrence, an attempt was made to assassinate the Federation President by one of his aides. The conferrence was already in progress when Kira noticed something she thought was a little strange about one of the President's aides, and told Jake. They were both quietly making their way across the room when the aide suddenly stood up with a phaser aimed at the president. Kira was closest to the President and quickly knocked him out of the way, but unfortunately was hit with the blast meant for him. A split second later, without knowing exactly what happened yet, Jake tackled the aide. While wrestling him for the phaser, the assailant set it on overload. Jake managed to get it away from him and ran to the nearest exit. Making sure it was clear of people, Jake threw the phaser into a solid waste disposal bin, but the force of the explosion threw him into the wall of the building . . . breaking his right wrist and giving him a mild concussion. When he regained consciousness in the Constitution's sick bay, he was told what happened . . . Kira was dead. The President immediately reccommended Jake for promotion for his actions, but Jake refused to accept it at that time. Losing Kira was losing a huge chunk of his life, and awards was the last thing he wanted right now. He did eventually, however somewhat unwillingly, accept another Wound Decoration [his third], the Medal Of Honor, The Prantares Ribbon Of Commendation [Ist class], the Star Fleet Command Decoration For Valor, and the Star Fleet Command Citation For Conspicuous Gallantry. He knew that life and duty must go on, but it would never be the same again. That part of his life was gone. Eventually, he would recover - but never completely. The Constitution now needed a new Chief of Security, so on stardate 6706.2 - Lieutenant Commander R. J. Koenig, an Alpha Centaurian, was assigned.
About two years later, on stardate 6905.09, the Constitution was assigned to the Coridan system to check on reports of Orion pirates in the area. They found nothing. So Caffey ordered a ground search of what intelligence reports said was the most likely place for them to be. The reports seemed false . . . at least until Caffey discovered what appeared to be the remains of an Orion communications system at what looked like a deserted campsite. Suddenly Caffey, and his men were attacked by a band of Tellarites. Fortunately for the landing party, the Tellarites were not heavily armed, however they were quite formidable. One had an old style hand laser, and was about to shoot his new Security Chief when Caffey tackled him and knocked the gun out of his hand. After what felt like hours of struggling, the Tellarites surrendered. Caffey, and his security team, took them back to the ship where they were secured in the brig until they could be taken home to stand trial by their own government. For his actions, Caffey received the Star Fleet Command Decoration For Gallantry. on stardate 700I.04, the U.S.S. Constitution came home after her Five Year Mission . . . the second Heavy Cruiser to do so intact. Second only to the U.S.S. Enterprise, NCC-I70I.
On stardate 700I.06, Jake Caffey was promoted to Commodore, and given command of the Class I Dreadnought, the U.S.S. Star League, Federation Class Starship, NCC-2I0I. R. J. Koenig was also promoted to Commander, and was requested by Jake to still be his Chief of Security. Most of his 'Command Crew' are handpicked by him, some of them from his last command - the U.S.S. Constitution. Jake has definitely found a home.

PERSONALITY:
Jake Caffey is pretty much easy going. He's caring and compassionate [especially where his crew is concerned], but can be as hard and solid as neutronium when he has to be. He loves to have a good time, but will never let it interfere with his command. There is very, very little [if anything] that means more to him than his ship or crew! As the saying goes . . . 'He has a lot of friends in very high places', but would never take advantage of that fact. He will in most cases like, and to a point, trust you from the start . . . until you give him a reason not to! His command training and tactical skills, combined with his compassion, reasoning and experience help make him an excellent Starship Commander. He also has an almost burning desire to know the unknown!
